A black box theatre is a simple performance space, typically small with plain black walls and a flat floor. This allows for a large number of different configurations, making black box theatres highly adaptable spaces.
Yale-NUS’ Black Box Theatre was one of only five such theatres in Singapore.
It had 126 retractable seats, moveable black curtains, a flexible lighting rig and a large projection screen.
Holding up to 185 people—including technical crew and performers—it was an intimate space for theatre, dance, music and other performances, as well as for rehearsals and as a gathering space for talks, workshops, classes and other events.
This tour was filmed during a class given by Theatre Programme Coordinator and Lecturer of Humanities (Theatre), Jonathan Vandenberg.
We invite Yale-NUS community members, past and present, to collaborate with us to make these initiatives truly special.
