Many scholarships and study awards were available to ease the financial burden of attending the College, enabling students to experience a life-changing educational opportunity.
Scholarships and Study Awards
Many donors came from within the Yale-NUS community itself, with students, alumni, faculty and staff giving generously to the College.
Jane Binks describes how the first graduating class established the Senior Class Gift Campaign.
The Senior Class Gift (SCG) Campaign encouraged graduating students to donate, with the funds raised going towards financial aid for future Yale-NUS applicants.
The first year to graduate in 2017 raised $4,557, with 91% of Seniors contributing.
—Zachary Mahon (Class of 2017), member of the inaugural SCG Committee.
The Alumni Giving Programme allowed Yale-NUS alumni to also contribute to the College. The 2020 campaign raised over $13,000 with over 20% participation, with the money going towards financial aid, and academic and student programmes.
Jane Binks recalls how alumni donated generously.
International students could also receive donor-funded scholarships to support them through their Yale-NUS education.
—Gytis Greičius (Class of 2024), a recipient of the Yale-NUS Global Leader Scholarship.
—Soroush Saleh (Class of 2025), a recipient of the Kewalram Chanrai Scholarship.
Shim Tae Sun (Class of 2022) shares how the Yale-NUS College International Scholarship transformed his time at the College.
Internships helped students gain professional experience and personal development, but could be expensive and involve overseas travel, so sometimes extra funding was required to make them viable.

The Sustainable Development Goals Grant supported students in gaining professional experience in the social development sector, where they could engage with marginalised communities and address global challenges such as poverty, inequality and climate change.
The grant was established in memory of
Reverend Dr Yap Kim Hao.
The Self-Directed Internship Funding programme was made possible by the Alice and Peter Tan Endowment. Organised by the Centre for International & Professional Experience (CIPE), the programme allowed students to create their own internship experience to suit their specific interests.
Wanting to pursue a career in the arts, Keziah Quek (Class of 2017) contacted Christie’s International auction house to see if they would offer her an internship.
Many programmes were created to support faculty positions, teaching and research at the College.
Various conferences, events and programmes were also made possible by sponsorship from generous benefactors.
In March 2023, the College organised its inaugural Geopolitics Conference titled ‘US-China Rivalry: Domestic Determinants of Foreign Policy in Southeast Asia’. The event was supported by the Tan Chin Tuan Chinese Culture & Civilisation Programme.
The lecture series ‘The Yale-NUS Lecture on Global Affairs’ was sponsored by the late Professor Saw Swee Hock, noted philanthropist and NUS professor.
As part of the series, in 2023 Dr Radha Kumar, a renowned expert in conflict resolution and democracy, gave the lecture ‘How Democracies Renew’.
The individuals, families and organisations that so generously provided donations to help with the establishment of the College were honoured on the Founding Benefactors Wall, which was mounted near the Yale-NUS College Hall (formerly the Performance Hall).
