Development and Donors

Philanthropy had a profound impact on the Yale-NUS community of students, faculty and staff.  The generosity, kindness and care of the many donors to the College opened up numerous opportunities in education, research and experiential learning.

This story contains extensive quotations from Jane Binks, Senior Director of Development at Yale-NUS (2020–2023).

Scholarships and Study Awards

Many scholarships and study awards were available to ease the financial burden of attending the College, enabling students to experience a life-changing educational opportunity.

Community Giving

Many donors came from within the Yale-NUS community itself, with students, alumni, faculty and staff giving generously to the College.

One of the defining characteristics of the College was its close community.

Jane Binks describes how the first graduating class established the Senior Class Gift Campaign.

The Senior Class Gift (SCG) Campaign encouraged graduating students to donate, with the funds raised going towards financial aid for future Yale-NUS applicants.

The first year to graduate in 2017 raised $4,557, with 91% of Seniors contributing.

As we become alumni and spread across the globe, the ways in which we can be involved in the Yale-NUS community will change. Having all of us coming together to give back is about acknowledging and accepting this transition.

—Zachary Mahon (Class of 2017), member of the inaugural SCG Committee.

The Alumni Giving Programme allowed Yale-NUS alumni to also contribute to the College. The 2020 campaign raised over $13,000 with over 20% participation, with the money going towards financial aid, and academic and student programmes.

International Experiences

International students could also receive donor-funded scholarships to support them through their Yale-NUS education.

I have found great joy in the process of searching for common ground between me and other Yale-NUS students, faculty or staff, while at the same time appreciating how the unique differences in our upbringing and experiences seamlessly gather and grow around these commonalities.

—Gytis Greičius (Class of 2024), a recipient of the Yale-NUS Global Leader Scholarship.

Studying at Yale-NUS has been my dream for a long time, and you have helped to make that dream a reality. Thank you so much for your support and I hope I can make you proud.

Internships

Internships helped students gain professional experience and personal development, but could be expensive and involve overseas travel, so sometimes extra funding was required to make them viable.

A lot of our donors were particularly attracted to the College’s emphasis on study abroad and experiential learning.

The Sustainable Development Goals Grant supported students in gaining professional experience in the social development sector, where they could engage with marginalised communities and address global challenges such as poverty, inequality and climate change.

The grant was established in memory of
Reverend Dr Yap Kim Hao.

The Self-Directed Internship Funding programme was made possible by the Alice and Peter Tan Endowment. Organised by the Centre for International & Professional Experience (CIPE), the programme allowed students to create their own internship experience to suit their specific interests.

Wanting to pursue a career in the arts, Keziah Quek (Class of 2017) contacted Christie’s International auction house to see if they would offer her an internship.

I wasn’t sure if it was a pipe dream but I was determined to try. So I got in touch, and the right people decided I was worth recommending, and I got the internship of my dreams!
