Food and Fun

Although Yale-NUS students worked hard, there was also time to have fun, meet friends and socialise, or just relax, recharge and, of course, eat good food.

Yale-NUS Gourmet Club

The Yale-NUS Gourmet Club built a community centred around food, with food-related social events, charity events and excursions.

Brewhouse

Brewhouse was the student-run coffee cart founded by Jessica 'Fred' Chang and Xinlei 'Macca' Lee (both Class of 2019), with the support and funding from Saga Rector Sarah Weiss and the Dean of Students Office. Rector Weiss commented that "They will learn lots of stuff by being baristas, don't you think?!".

Brewhouse’s official launch was held in October 2016 at Café Agora. They soon acquired their iconic cart and moved to their home in Elm Courtyard.

Although based in Elm, the cart could be moved to other locations for events. Here they have set up at the Oculus to serve visitors to the campus during 2019’s Yale-NUS Open Day.

Flavourful Connections

In addition to the student organisations, there were plenty of other opportunities for students to learn about each other’s food cultures.

In April 2016, students congregated in Elm’s buttery to take a Cookies and Chai Study Break before exams, and to bake cookies with staff member Austin Shiner.

Organised by the Student Affairs Office, a Food Art gathering in November 2016 saw students using food to shape their own artistic creations.

Students and faculty mingled over a Community BBQ Brunch at Café Agora in November 2019. The brunch was organised by the Dean of Students Office.

Beach Plz

Beach Plz was an annual event held on Sentosa beach, a chance to relax, eat and drink, play games and have fun in the sun to mark the end of each year’s first semester.

GOYAC

GOYAC (Good Ol’ Yale-NUS Adventurers’ Club) was the College’s outdoor activities organisation. They coordinated a range of events that gave students the opportunity to leave the confines of campus behind and explore Singapore and the region.

Their activities were a great way to get some exercise while meeting like-minded people, visiting new places and enjoying nature.

Participants could also get a respite from academic pressures, relax and recharge.

Halloween

Halloween parties were another popular Yale-NUS tradition, with students, faculty and staff competing to dress up and decorate the campus in the spookiest possible way. There were also fun activities like trick or treating, haunted houses and lots of snacks and drinks.

Halloween time at Yale-NUS was always the time to surprise, delight, be bold, and let our inner child loose!

May Wang (Class of 2023) recalls playing a game of Hitman with her suitemates on Halloween.
